Autumn might mean the beginning of shorter days and cooler weather – but if you’re in Australia, it’s also the season for long weekends. Between the Easter break, ANZAC day public holiday and more, the extra time away from work is the ideal opportunity to head out of town for a long weekend escape.

We’ve put together our list of some of the best destinations for a 3 or 4-day getaway at this time of year – or any time of year, really. Don’t forget to bring a few bottles of Solara with you, so you can keep the fizz going too!

New South Wales
The Southern Highlands

With their rolling hills, lush greenery and quaint towns, the Southern Highlands make for the perfect long weekend destination. Just a few hours out of Sydney, you can do as much – or as little – as you like. Get lost in the boutiques of Bowral, take a hike to Fitzroy Falls, or put together a picnic with local produce from the historic Berrima General Store. The Highlands has become a mecca for fine dining, too – so make a reservation at Eschalot or Bistro Sociale and dig in.

Victoria
Daylesford & Hepburn Springs

You hear the words ‘Spa Country’ and you immediately feel some of those everyday stresses slip away. Daylesford and neighbouring Hepburn Springs are the go-to for a long weekend of relaxation and rejuvenation – set amongst some of the most stunning scenery in Victoria. Book some time at The Spa at Lake House, The Mineral Spa, Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa, or anywhere that feels just right to recharge.

If you can step away from your spa day, you’ll find plenty of country charm along Daylesford Main Street, dining destinations like The Surly Goat, plus the beautiful Daylesford Lake – perfect for a prosecco picnic.

Queensland
Stanthorpe

The coastal destinations get their fair share of praise (and for good reason). But for a different take on a Queensland long weekend, hop in the car and head to Stanthorpe. Just a short drive from Brisbane, this beautiful part of the Granite Belt has long weekend written all over it. National parks? Check. Plenty of wineries? Check. Some of the rarest truffles in the world? Big check – there’s a whole Discovery Centre dedicated to them.

Head for Stanthorpe and you’ll come home well-fed, well-rested and filled with wonder at the beauty of inland Queensland. All in a long weekend.

South Australia
Clare Valley

The Barossa might be the biggest wine region in SA, but the Clare Valley is certainly the most charming – and perfect for a 3 or 4-night stay. With its inviting villages, rolling fields of farmland and sprawling vineyards, you’ll feel worlds away from the city (even though Adelaide is just two hours down the road).

One of the best parts of the Clare Valley? It’s cycling tracks. Hope on a two-wheeler and soak up the surroundings (which are especially striking in autumn), as you pedal from Martindale Hall to the Mintaro Maze and beyond. If you’ve worked up a hunger, treat yourself to dinner at the Magpie & Stump Hotel (plus some prosecco when you get back to your accommodation).

Western Australia
Pemberton

Nestled in the southwest end of WA, not far from Margaret River, Pemberton has something for everyone. If you’re up for adventure, go hiking amongst the towering karri trees in Gloucester National Park, or paddle down the Warren River (soundtracked by soothing birdsong). If it’s a more relaxed long weekend you’re after, stroll through the quaint town centre, or experience a traditional European wood-fired sauna (banya) at the Vëska Sauna Resort. From nature to nourishment, Pemberton has your long weekend sorted.

Tasmania
The Coal River Valley

Head east from Hobart and you’ll find the perfectly picturesque Coal River Valley. Filled with inviting rural retreats, beautifully-preserved history (like Australia’s oldest bridge) and stunning landscapes, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time. Richmond is the region’s main town and is filled with great dining spots and authentic antique stores. If you’re looking for some cheese or chocolate to go with your Solara, Coal River Farm, Wicked Cheese and Federation Chocolate have you sorted.

Northern Territory
Katherine Gorge

The never-ending natural wonders of the NT might take more than one long weekend to explore, but you can tailor one unforgettable short stay in the striking Katherine Gorge (especially in the autumn months, when the top end starts its dry season and the temps settle down a bit).

You can cruise through the gorge for some croc spotting, soak up some of the country’s most unique landscapes and discover more about the region’s rich First Nations history. Then unwind in luxury at the Cicada Lodge or Gorge View Bush Retreat.

No matter where your long weekend takes you, we look forward to coming along for the ride. A little fizz always takes a short-stay getaway to even greater heights.

Till next time,
Team Solara.
